SNVIA Advances Microneedle Drug Delivery

SNVIA is a venture company founded in 2016 after acquiring microneedle technology developed by a team from the Department of Biomaterials Science at Pusan National University. Microneedles are ultra-fine needles that adhere to the skin to deliver drugs and are gaining attention as a next-generation drug delivery technology that can replace conventional hypodermic injections. The microneedle technology spearheaded by SNVIA is a core component of the transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS), which administers medication through the skin. As it can be easily applied like a patch, it causes minimal pain and enables self-administration without visiting a hospital, making it particularly suitable for elderly patients or those requiring home-based treatment. SNVIA has overcome one of the key limitations of conventional microneedles—difficulty in precise dose control—through a proprietary “layered coating” process. This method precisely coats medication only on the needle tips, ensuring accurate and consistent drug delivery into the skin. Moreover, it can coat more than ten times the amount of drug compared to conventional coating methods, offering enhanced cost-effectiveness.

The technology was recognized for its excellence when it won first prize at the International Microneedles Conference held in Seattle, United States, in 2023.
